Hywel’s extensive body of work illustrates his remarkable range as a character actor. Some of the following titles are available on DVD and video – this is indicated by a double asterisk at the title.

Starring Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde, Jude Law as Lord Alfred Douglas, Vanessa Redgrave as Lady Wilde (Oscar’s mother), Jennifer Ehle as Constance Wilde (Oscar’s wife) and Tom Wilkinson as the Marquess of Queensberry (Lord Alfred Douglas’ father). The film was nominated for 2 BAFTAs in 1998 (Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Ehle and Zoë Wanamaker), a Golden Globe in 1999 (Best Actor, Stephen Fry) and won a Best Actor award for Stephen Fry at the Seattle International Film Festival in 1998.

Starring Gwyneth Paltrow (Viola de Lesseps/Thomas Kent), Joseph Fiennes (Will Shakespeare), Tom Wilkinson (Hugh Fennyman), Geoffrey Rush (Philip Henslowe) and Dame Judi Dench (Queen Elizabeth I). The film has been nominated for and won many awards including 7 Oscars (Best Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, Best Supporting Actress Judi Dench, Best Writing, Best Music, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Picture) and 3 BAFTAs (Best Supporting Actress Judi Dench, Best Film and Best Editing). (People have speculated (well, alright, we’ve speculated) that the real reason Gwyneth was crying when she got her Oscar was because Hywel was too busy with The Bill to make another movie with her. Well, it’s a good story.)
**House! (2000). Directed by Julian Kemp and written by Jason Sutton. Starring Kelly McDonald, Jason Hughes, Freddie Jones, Miriam Margolyes, Bruce Forsythe and Keith Chegwin. Unfortunately the official site no longer exists.
**Enigma (2001). Directed by Michael Apted and adapted for the screen by Tom Stoppard. Based on the novel by Robert Harris. Starring Dougray Scott, Kate Winslet, Jeremy Northam and Saffron Burrows. Official UK launch site: www.thefilmfactory.co.uk/enigma/
